in the saddle

Ears pitched forward
At the trot
Head held high on a neck
Of muscled might
That wears a coat
Of winter white
Freckled brown from
Summer sun
And on her back, leather in
Brown and black
Creaks and squeaks against
The stitch
While all the tack
Buckles, rings, and bit
Jingle-jangle, chime
And clink
Underneath the forest
Canopy
We bounce along
A narrow trail
Where fallen leaves and trees
Offer a tale
Of seasons past and storms
Blown in from the sea
While over rises, dips, and turns
We pitch and heel
Past timid deer
And silent fox
On hooves shod in steel
That stomp and clomp
And keep the beat
In our duet
