premonition

That day I waited at the harbor front
When halfway up the rain-soaked walk
I heard your harsh and gritty steps
Tearing apart all our promises.
My stomach fell, my heart compressed
When I saw your face unfamiliar, strange,
Wavering before me like a drunken rainbow
Of black, white and gray. Nothing was said.
But I turned first, a smallish triumph
Strode away from you, my leather shoes
Making quick confident cloppy strides
As I headed to the market square
And then home to sharpen my knives
To behead, gut and bake. The catch of the day.
