What is the Amaranth?
The Amaranth is Anne Arundel Community College’s literary and artistic journal. The journal comes out once a year, usually at some point near the end of the spring semester.

Who is eligible to submit to the Amaranth?
Current students and AACC alumni are eligible to submit for publication in the Amaranth.

What kind of work does Amaranth accept?
We’ll take just about anything, as long as it can be printed on a page in a book. This includes poetry, short stories, pictures (both b&w and color), artwork (paintings, drawings, sketches, digital imagery and artwork, etc.), comics, rants, essays, short dramatic scenes, etc.

What doesn’t the Amaranth accept?
Pornographic material. That’s pretty much it.

Can I use vulgarity?
Yes, but try not to abuse the f***ing privilege.

Who decides what appears in the Amaranth?
The staff, editors, and faculty advisors of the Amaranth decide which submissions will be chosen to appear in that year’s issue. Every submission we receive is reviewed and considered for publication.

Is there a limit to what I can submit to the Amaranth?
No more than five works per student. Try to keep written submissions below 3000 words.

How can I submit to the Amaranth?
You can send your work to us at amaranth2004@yahoo.com, or you can drop off your work in Prof. Susan Rosen’s mailbox, located in Humanities 102.

Can I submit work via the website?
Currently, no, but this will change very soon. (The online submission system should be operational by October 1st).

What information do you need with my submissions?
- Name (if you want your name to appear as something else in the journal, include that information as well, but we will still need your REAL NAME for submission).
- Email address
- Home address
- Phone number

Can I submit anonymously?
Nope. Any work not including a name and some sort of contact information will not be considered for publication.

Is there a preferred format for sending written pieces?
Send as an email attachment in .rtf (preferred) or Microsoft Word (.doc) format. Acrobat files (.pdf format) are OK, too.

Is there a preferred format for sending artwork?
Scanned images are preferred… send as an email attachment in .tif, .gif, or .jpg format (300 dpi is preferred, but don’t worry if you don’t know what the dpi of your image is). Try to keep images smaller than 3mb. For larger artwork, photographic slides of the images are all we can accept. Email us for more info on how to get larger artwork formatted for publication (we can’t do it for you, but we might be able to direct you to someone on campus who can).
If the image is smaller than 8.5 inches by 11 inches, you can drop it off in Prof. Susan Rosen’s mailbox in Humanities 102. We will be happy to scan the image for you, but you are responsible for picking your materials up once we are done with them (we will contact you by phone or email when we do).

What is the deadline for submitting material?
Friday, December 12th, 2003.

Are there any ownership or copyright issues I should be aware of?
By submitting your work to Amaranth, it is implied that you are allowing us to publish your work (should we choose to do so). You will retain all ownership of your work, and we do not restrict you from publishing your work elsewhere. This is college, not Reader’s Digest. :)

How do I know if my work has been chosen?
You will be contacted via mail (or via email if a postal address has not been supplied) of your selection into the journal.

Can I join the staff of the Amaranth?
We are always looking for staff members for the journal. For more information on meeting times and duties, feel free to email us at amaranth2004@yahoo.com. Keep in mind, though, that staff members are NOT ELIGIBLE to submit material for publication.
